Vittorio Bellarosa (1907–1978/79) was a prominent Neapolitan luthier, regarded as one of the last true makers of the traditional Naples school. Trained under Vito Vitantonio, in Mittenwald, and later with Rodolfo Fredi in Rome, he returned to Naples around 1930 and went on to produce more than a thousand instruments. His work follows classic Gagliano models, usually with orange-to-red-brown varnish, and many pieces made after 1950 feature his distinctive two-seahorse brand on the ribs near the endpin. While best known for violins, he also crafted violas—fewer in number but valued for their workmanship and strong tonal qualities.

Because Bellarosa’s style closely mirrors earlier Neapolitan makers, some instruments have been misattributed, so provenance and expert certification are important. A genuine Bellarosa viola can be a strong investment: scarce, well-made, and appreciated by players and collectors. Anyone considering one should check for the correct label or brand, confirm dimensions and comfort (as some are around 41.5–42 cm), evaluate condition and setup, and compare the price with recent market results to ensure fair value.
