Mathias Neuner was part of a long line of violin makers from Mittenwald, Germany, where the Neuner family became one of the region’s most established names. Several makers in the family carried the name “Mathias,” working from the late 18th through the 19th century. By the early 1800s the Neuner family joined forces with the Hornsteiner family to form the well-known firm Neuner & Hornsteiner, which grew into one of Mittenwald’s major violin-making workshops. Their instruments follow traditional Mittenwald characteristics—clean outlines, well-cut scrolls, and varnishes ranging from golden-brown to reddish hues—and many were built on Stradivari-influenced models.
Because the company produced instruments at different levels, workmanship can vary from simple student pieces to well-crafted, higher-grade instruments. Many violins labeled “Mathias Neuner” were made in a workshop system, with parts created by various hands under the supervision of the Neuner family rather than by a single master. Still, good examples show fine tone, solid craftsmanship, and historically interesting representation of 19th-century Bavarian violin making. Proper appraisal is important, as authenticity, condition, and grade can significantly affect value.
This Stradivari model for sale is 356 cm in length and in excellent condition.
