Louis Guersan was born around 1702 and passed away on October 20, 1770, in Paris. His craftsmanship left a lasting mark on the world of string instruments, particularly in the French school of violin making.Louis Guersan was a Parisian violin maker active in the 18th century. He was a pupil of Claude Pierray and later succeeded in Pierray’s workshop. Guersan was appointed maker and repairer to the Dauphin and the OpĂ©ra, which speaks to his reputation and skill. He crafted a variety of instruments, including quintons, pardessus de viols, and violin family instruments. One of his pardessus de violes, made in 1770, is part of the collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The present violin is indeed a very fine instrument and Guersan certainly ranks with the finest of French makers. His instruments have highly skilled carving work. And speak with a very fine quality and very healthy sound, the instrument records beautifully as well and the woods are finely chosen, the instrument was made in 1753 and is indeed an historic masterpiece.
