Jean Baptiste Vuillaume (1798-1875) was the father of the modern violin making school in France the sheer number of instruments he made- over three thousand attirutes to the fact he in fact had many skilled workers in the shop working for him It is said the at the great Spanish violinist, Pablo de Sarasate said his copy of his Guarneri Del Gesu was undistinguishable from the original. Always the originator Vuillaume experimented with different sized instruments highlighted bey the Octobass at the Paris Conservatory of Music in Paris which has foot pedals to push down the mechanical frets!

The present viola is a very small viola by Vuillaume would be perfect for a very gifted player specializing in violin playing and occasionally recording or playing chamber music as a violist. It is about 14 7/8 inches and though it is a small sized viola it has a beautiful sonority and a terrific voice for recording. The instrument is signed by Vuillaume inside and bears the double purfling of his Maggini models. The scroll is a copy. At $ 19,500.00 this instrument represents a very nice investment and a piece violin history with a great deal of charm.
