Description

Giovanni Pistucci (1864–1955) stands as one of the most prominent and respected violin makers of the Neapolitan school, contributing significantly to the rich tradition of Italian luthiery. A devoted student of Vincenzo Postiglione, one of the preeminent luthiers of his time, Pistucci honed his craft under the guidance of this celebrated master. Like many of the renowned Italian makers before him, Pistucci began his career as an accomplished copyist, meticulously replicating the works of the great Neapolitan masters. Among these, he had a particular admiration for the Gagliano family, whose influence is distinctly evident in many of his creations.

One exceptional example of Pistucci’s artistry is a stunning viola measuring 16 3/8 inches, preserved in mint condition. This remarkable instrument is accompanied by a certification from Christophe Landon, a distinguished authority based in New York City. The viola boasts a distinguished provenance, having been previously owned by a highly esteemed principal player of the Philadelphia Orchestra and later by another acclaimed musician who frequently performed with this instrument.

The Pistucci viola produces a magnificent tone, characterized by its full, resonant, and richly expressive “true viola voice.” Its design allows for an expansive and vibrant sound with excellent resonance, providing ample tonal depth. Despite its generous dimensions, the viola remains comfortable for players, facilitating ease of navigation in upper positions.
