Victor Enzensperger was a distinguished maker of violins and guitars, active in Vienna, Austria during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in 1867, Victor followed in the footsteps of his father, Bernhard Enzensperger II, from whom he received his training. Bernhard was a respected luthier in his own right, and the family tradition of instrument craftsmanship was deeply rooted in the Viennese artisan culture.
Victor worked out of his shop at 7 Mozartgasse in Vienna, where he crafted violins, guitars, and various other string instruments. His reputation was built not only on his ability to create fine new pieces but also on his skill in restoration. For new instruments, he typically used oil varnish, prized for its depth and durability; for repairs, he turned to spirit varnish, reflecting his practical knowledge of materials.
Lineage of Craftsmanship Victor’s grandfather, Bernhard Enzensperger I, born in 1788 in Füssen, Germany, laid the foundation for the family’s legacy. He trained under Georg Thir, one of Vienna’s prominent violin makers of the early 19th century. In 1812, Bernhard I opened his own workshop in Vienna and quickly established a name for himself. His focus included violins, cellos, and guitars, and his innovative spirit led him to patent an “acoustic guitar” design in 1831.
Together, the Enzenspergers contributed to the rich tradition of Viennese violinmaking, a lineage that stretches back to the 14th century and includes some of Europe’s most skilled craftsmen.
The violin being offered dates from the late 1800s and reflects Victor Enzensperger’s attention to detail and tonal excellence. It features a striking reddish-orange varnish that highlights the fine woodwork beneath. Sonically, it delivers a robust and richly textured sound, a testament to the quality of materials and the mastery of its maker.
