This particular viola, a 16 ½-inch model, is the 67th instrument crafted by Carboni. Despite his declining health at the time, he remained dedicated to refining his craft—experimenting with arching, adjusting f-hole placement, and incorporating various woods, including Poplar for the back. Carboni was relentless in his pursuit of perfection, demonstrating remarkable discipline and tenacity. Though he barely completed high school, he was entirely self-taught in calculus, Japanese, and violin making, among other disciplines—an undeniable force in his field. A voracious reader and one of the few advocates of Dounis violin teachings, he was entrusted by the New York Philharmonic as their official repair specialist during tours. His instruments, rare and exquisite, truly stood the test of time.
his viola exemplifies modern craftsmanship, showcasing both authenticity and beauty. Carboni never relied on antique finishing, instead applying varnish with integrity throughout his lifelong experimentation. As with all his instruments, playability was a top priority, ensuring ease of use while maximizing sound projection. He achieved this without adding unnecessary bulk—avoiding excess weight that could hinder performance or dampen vital tonal vibrations. The result is a perfectly balanced contemporary viola, fully capable of standing alongside the finest instruments in use today.
