Antonio Sgarbi 1866- 1938 was an Italian violin maker born in 1866 in Finale Emilia. He was the son of Giuseppe Sgarbi, a luthier, and trained under his father’s guidance. Throughout his career, he moved between several cities, including Rome, Palermo, and Modena. He succeeded his father’s workshop in Rome in 1890 and later worked as a luthier at the Bellini Conservatory in Palermo from 1905 to 1911.

His craftsmanship followed the Emilian style, characterized by narrow and rounded models with elongated sound holes. His violins often featured a polished golden-orange or yellow varnish. Some of his instruments have been auctioned for significant prices, with records showing sales of violins and cellos attributed to him.

The violin featured here is a true concert violin. There is a soundpost crack on the back which though beautifully repaired cuts the price in half. It in no way effects the sound quality and or strength however the violin enthusiasts follow dealers’ opinions. The violin is being offered for less than twenty thousand dollars and offers true value for the player of a great violin at half the normal cost.
